That’s right. I’m not afraid to shout it from the rooftops…I LOVE SWEATPANTS!!!

Embarrassing admission in 3, 2, 1…In high school, I was a total product of the gangsta rap movement. So much so, in fact, that I prided myself on solely wearing baggy sweatpants and hoodies for about a year of my life. I had an afro, wore big diamond earrings…the works. As terrifying as this is to think back on, the one part of that era that stuck with me was my love for a good pair of sweats. Back then, you only had a few options. You either bought your sweatpants at a sporting goods store or at Wal-Mart. Now, with the streetwear movement and the tailoring re-emergence, sweatpants are a normal staple in even the most stylish of men’s outfits.

Today I’m spotlighting this pair from New Zealand based brand, Thing Thing. High fashion designers have taken it upon themselves to develop sweatpants into a piece that fits like a nice pair of denim, yet also still has the flexibility of the classic sweatpants aesthetic. I’m loving the slight drop crotch, as well as the side pocket placement. The pockets are a bit lower than the hip, giving the pants a slightly more slouched vibe without tipping into sloppy. The half heather grey and half darker grey pattern is also very cool for standing out without being obnoxious, which you know I love. The fitted lower leg and the jogger cuff finish these off as such a great pair of pants that can be worn to the gym or to that coveted fourth date…you know, the one where you finally get to go to the other person’s apartment and have them cook for you.

I decided to dress the sweats up a bit with this cool button up, also from Thing Thing. The grey matches the pants well and I love the black dot sleeve detailing. Throwing on my classic Product of New York topstar lo sneakers and these oversized shades from Ashbury was the easiest way to finish the outfit in a simple and fun way.

Overall, an extremely simple look when you break down the pieces. Don’t be afraid to combine things that you normally wouldn’t consider. Fitted sweats can go great with a t-shirt and blazer for a fun guys night out. You can even wear them with boots. You never want to forget to think outside of the box, dudes!

What are you feelings on sweatpants??

Stay smiling, my friends!
