I had the privilege of shooting photos with an old friend earlier this week and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.

Suits are an interesting thing these days. The olden days of bespoke, custom tailoring are back in style, whereas the corporate world is less demanding of wearing a suit to work every day than it ever has been. This leaves us guys in an pickle because unless you are the type to be wearing a suit on a daily basis, there’s not much need to own one anymore. Most all guys have that one go-to suit for special occasions, which they only wear a couple of times a year. It’s typically ill-fitting and out of style. I want to show how a suit can be worn multiple ways, therefore increasing our need for suits!

I only own two suits (which I hope will expand soon), this grey one from Zara and a khaki one for summertime. The beauty of a suit is versatility!

I started out in a more dressy option with a white shirt and a button up sweater. Sweaters can oftentimes be a good replacement for a tie while maintaining the dressiness necessary.

Next, I lost the black sweater and threw on a a zip up hoody that dresses the outfit down substantially. Again, it’s a suit so you’re going to maintain a certain level of class just by wearing the matching pieces, but the hoody takes you from the board room to the streets comfortably. You can choose to wear a tie or not with a hoody, it’s going to look great regardless.

Lastly, don’t forget that a suit has pants that can be worn on their own as a nice pair of slacks. I oftentimes forget this as an option. Wearing the individual pieces of a suit on their own is totally acceptable. I wore the same white shirt, threw on a black tie and my denim jacket and all of a sudden I’m dressy-casual.

Basically put, a suit needs to fit. If you don’t know how it should fit your body type, consult a tailor. If you have deep pockets, a more expensive suit is worth the money. Something timeless and well-built will never go out of style. But, if you’re like me and aren’t rolling in dough (yet!), don’t be afraid to bargain shop at stores like Zara, Men’s Wearhouse or Suitsupply.com. Having one or two suits is essential. Buy one in a dark color like black, dark navy or grey and one in a lighter shade as well.

Multi-functionality is a beautiful thing! Get creative and enjoy the endless possibilities.
